The Joys of June


Painting Class

This art class is a great way to relax with a new hobby and bond with new friends. This week our community artists painted beautiful cakes, foxes, and more flowers.

 

Grand Opening of District Office

On Sunday, June 2, 2024, our community joined together to celebrate the District Office Grand Opening with Councilmember Susan Zhuang- What a wonderful and exciting event with music and performances, filled with the excitement of a community!

 

International Children's Day

In honor of International Children's Day, we brought families to Governor's Island for our recent Historical Exploration of New York (HENY). We had a wonderful picnic, visited historic sites, and played games on the island.

 

Learning how to make Zongzi

On Tuesday, June 6th, we came together to make Zongzi, or sticky rice dumplings!

This tradition is part of the Dragon Boat Festival (Duanwu Festival). Making Zongzi, filled with sticky rice and delicious fillings, helps keep his memory alive and brings us together to celebrate our cultural heritage.

 

Men's Health Resources Awareness

We hope you all had a wonderful Father's Day and enjoyed the activities at the Men's Health Resources Awareness Exhibition. A special shoutout to Molina Healthcare and our sponsors for helping make this possible!


 

CPR Training Class

On Sunday, June 16, we had a CPR training class for our community members! Empowering our community with CPR skills ensures we're ready to help each other in times of need.

 

Workshop for Teens

Today, we held a workshop to discuss the needs of our teens and young adults in our community and explore ways we can better serve them. Engaging in these important conversations helps us create a supportive environment where our youth can thrive.

 

LEAD & LEARN

Our new program for teens, Lead & Learn, is in motion! Our first workshop yesterday encouraged shy students to express themselves, and integrated mindfulness practices with elements of outdoor nature play. Afterward, we brought these activities to our After-school Program to lead children. And a special thank you to Brook Li for teaching and leading us!

 

End of Year Jeopardy

As the end of the 2023-2024 school year comes to a close, we devised a game of Jeopardy for the students in our After-school Program. This game reviewed math, ranging from fractions, geometry, basic operations, and a random category. They practiced teamwork, knowledge retention, and comprehension.

 

Mental Health Class

On Thursday, June 27th, our community learned about the risks of suicide, and about encouraging professional help for themselves and others should they ever need it- because above all, we must prioritize our mental health! Thank you to Mental Health First Aid USA for leading the conversation!

 

Trip to Governors Island

On Friday, June 28th, our volunteers traveled to Governors Island. With lots of open space for games and picnics, they bonded with one another by opening up with icebreakers. As part of our Lead & Learn program, we strive to nurture strong leaders within our young community. Thank you Brook Li for leading the group!

 

Lean and Learn Program: Outdoor Activities

We brought the community into our Lead & Learn program. These outdoor games unite everyone, breaking through the awkwardness of meeting strangers and becoming friends. Members of all ages joined us, engaging in activities related to nature to bring us closer to our environment and community. Thank you Brook Li, once again for being an amazing teacher!

 

Family Fun Day

Admission is free- Join us at our local parks for family activities! We're at Sunset Park every Sunday from 10 AM to 12 PM and Leif Ericson Park every Saturday from 10 AM to 1 PM!

 

Community Beautification

Our volunteers are continuing our efforts to clean up our community and free it from litter and debris. We join together on weekends to clean at Leif Ericson Park, Sunset Park, and McKinley Park. To join us, book online at: https://www.pcr.nyc/volunteerevents
